Many Things Contribute To The Way A Person Acts, Or Reacts,

Many things contribute to the way a person acts, or reacts, to stimulation in life. There are different societal expectations placed upon men and women that may influence their behaviour, thoughts, and perceptions. One area of particular interest to me is the differences in the way that people of different genders think and feel about topics that are often discussed in feminism. As a female who identifies as a feminist, my thoughts regarding issues such as equal pay, reproductive rights, and sexual violence often differ greatly than those of my male friends, who often do not identify as a feminist. I decided to focus on the latter of the issues mentioned, specifically looking at how women’s perceptions on sexual harassment differ from†¦show more content†¦I would like to study a wide range of ages, as there may be additional perceptual differences between different cohorts, so my ideal, I would have a minimum of 40 participants, who would be males and females between the ages of 18 and 65. In order to attract participants, I would like to advertise through whatever my funding source is (for example, if the research is done through Laurentian university, we could send out emails and meet with classes), as well as through online social media in order to reach those who may not be in the same geographic location as me. My research would take the form of triangulation, which is â€Å"...the use of more than one research technique simultaneously, usually employing at least one quantitative and one qualitative method† (Levan, 2016, p. 80). This would be done us ing surveys that use both closed-ended and open-ended questions, therefore using both research methods (Levan, 2016). An example of a closed-ended question would be â€Å"I have experienced sexual harassment in my workplace†, to which possible answers could be â€Å"Agree†; â€Å"Disagree†; â€Å"Unsure†; or â€Å"Not applicable†. Tabulating the closed-ended questions would be relatively easy, however, in order to process the answers given to the open-ended questions, I may need to interpret to the answers to try and find common themes. Monroe Doctrine - 1660 Words

Monroe Doctrine The Monroe Doctrine can be considered as the United States first major declaration to the world as a fairly new nation. The Monroe Doctrine was a statement of United States policy on the activity and rights of powers in the Western Hemisphere during the early to mid 1800s. The doctrine established the United States position in the major world affairs of the time. Around the time of the Napoleonic Wars in the 1820s, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Colombia all gained their independence from Spanish control (quot;Monroe Doctrinequot; 617). The United States was the first nation to recognize their independence from Spain. The European powers had still considered the new nations as still belonging to Spain. The Americans had a†¦show more content†¦Jefferson had said with Great Britain, quot;on our side, we not fear the worldquot; (quot;Monroe Doctrinequot; 617). Although Great Britain and the United States were on the same track, they had differences. The United Sta tes had recognized the colonies as new nations and Great Britain had not (Perkins 37). George Canning said that Great Britain would use their powerful Royal Navy to stop European intervention whether or not they had a joint declaration (quot;Monroe Doctrinequot; 617). Then on October 12th, 1823 Canning had a number of meetings with Prince Jules de Polignac who was a French ambassador in London. Their meetings concluded with the Polignac Memorandum, saying that France would not help Spain regain her lost colonies. All of this hindered the action toward cooperation. John Q. Adams had opposed the issue of a joint statement with the British (Migill 595). Adams asked, quot; Why should the United States appear as a cockboat in the wake of a British man-of-war?quot; (Perkins 51). With the guaranteed backing of the British Royal Navy and the Polignac Memorandum the United States did not need the British in the statement. The United States would not have to share the glory with the British. M onroe, convinced by Adams arguments, agreed to go on their own. Electronic Funds Transfer Processes

Question: Discuss about the Electronic Funds Transfer Processes. Answer: Introduction: The project that was included during the internship included a number of payment systems to be implemented along with frequent use of Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). The same were implemented and monitored as per the AS-2805 standard which is an Australian standard that has been specifically designed for EFTs. There have been thirty three As-2805 standards that have been published so far and they cover the various components that come under EFTs that are used across a number of ICT projects. The major objective of the project during the internship was to keep the data and information of the customers protected at all times and the payment information was classified as the most sensitive and private piece of information out of all. The implementation of payments and EFTs were therefore guarded by the AS-2805 specifications covering a number of different topics such as management of the PIN number for the generation and completion of the EFT processes, authorization and management of the cards of the users, security and management of the keys utilized, authentication of the messages, privacy and encryption of the data, communication activities along with transfer of files from one point to the other and message structure between the two parties. All of these topics and guidelines provided mechanisms to make sure that the Electronic Fund Transfers were initiated and completed successfully in a secure environment without any scope of the security attacks executed by the attackers. Fraud monitoring and management guidelines defined under AS-2805 were also utilized in the project (Merwe, 2014). References Merwe, A. (2014). AS2805 Standards for EFT. The Trung Sisters Essays - , Term Papers, Research Papers

The Trung Sisters By: Addison Stout We live in the western world not by the American view but of the Asian view. A place that has been invaded multiply times, not just by the western worlds but, by their own neighbors that were looking to expand territory. For Americans the west is the old world, the world that many of our ancestors came from to form this country where we could be free or freer then being ruled by a King, but yet Americans were not as free as what they originally believed they would be, in this they had to band together to remove the invaders from the west. But, long before we could even imagine time both England and Vietnam had to learn to fight to protect themselves from China that repeatedly kept trying to dominate Vietnam and the expanding Roman Empire that was taking control of the European lands that spread to the British Iles where the Romans would be met with such strong forces that they would have to retreat and regroup before they could attempt to conquer the Iles. This, however, is not about the military conquest of the Chinese or the Roman Empire, but rather the strong women warriors that both armies came up against as they invaded. What makes a woman a warrior queen? Is it her stamina? Is it her ability to fight in a battle? Is it her ability to lead troops into battle and rally them to fight to oust the invaders? For Trung Trac and her sister Trung Nhi, it is all of these things. It is these things that helped these women fight off the invaders from their lands. For both the Trung sisiters it was the 1000 year Chinese control over Vietnam for some others such as Boudicca it was the threat of the Roman Empire to take over her lands. All these women share many things in common all three had to watch as their families where killed by the invaders and either they were raped or their family members where. This is how we find both Trung Trac and Trung Nhi. To understand these women is to first understand the history of Vietnam.During the first century of history of Vietnam there lived two daughters of a powerful lord their names, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi. These daughters as they grew up had to witness the atrocities committed to the Vietnamese people by the ruling Chinese having grown up witnessing such crimes committed against their people would be what helped them to lead a revolt against the ruling Chinese. Since the Trung sisters couldn't stand such cruel treatment to their own people, with the support of tribal lords, they gathered an army of 80,000 people, thirty-six being women, including their mother. By the year 40 A.D., the Trung sisters, along with their army, had liberated sixty-five fortresses and finally drove the Chinese out of Vietnam. The people of Vietnam rejoiced over this tremendous victory and proclaimed Trung Trac to be their ruler. They renamed her "Trung Vuong" or "She-king Trung." Trung Trac established her new court in Me-linh, an ancient political center, in the present day province of Vinh Phu, in the Hong River plain. As the new queen of Vietnam, she cleared out the much-hated tribute taxes imposed by the Chinese officials and tried to restore a simpler form of government that was more in line with traditional Vietnamese values. But these joyful times weren't going to last, in the year 42 A.D., the Chinese were sent to recapture Vietnam under General Ma-Vien. For the next year, the Trung sisters engaged in constant battles. The queen and all her people fought hard to resist the invaders, but the troops were defeated miserably in 43 A.D. Rather than accept the utter defeat and be captured, the Trung sisters chose the traditional Vietnamese way of maintaining honor. They committed suicide by jumping into the Hat-Giang River on the 60th day of the second lunar eclipse. The courage and bravery of these two women have been remembered and admired over the centuries. They have become the topic of many stories, plays, legends, and poems. There are also shrines and monuments throughout Vietnam that still glorify their heroism. One

Diversity in the Workplace Essays

Diversity in the Workplace Essays Diversity in the Workplace Essay Diversity in the Workplace Essay Age, physical and mental ability; chapter thirteen and fourteen Union Institute University 1 . What possible effects could a large proportion of people aged 45 to 64 and a smaller proportion of people under 45 in the current workforce have on organizations ability to attract and retain a competent and motivated workforce? How might discrimination against younger and older workers combined affect employers, given the shifting age distribution? In the corporate world, some managers and supervisors do not want to hire older workers and others do not want to hire younger errors, complex, expensive, dysfunctional recruitment and selection could result. The shortage of younger workers and the aging of the population make employment fairness toward both groups of workers critical to employers ability to attract and retain an adequate supply of workers in the future. Moreover, the importance of fairness to young workers, their future careers, and future influence on diversity issues should provide organizations with sufficient motivation to treat younger workers fairly, even in the absence of legislation requiring it. However, this coordination is likely to affect the employer since the worlds population is aging, and older people are working longer than ever before. Because these older workers often have more corporate memory and experience than others, organizations that fail to recognize the value in providing opportunities for older workers will be disadvantaged. In addition, there are fewer younger workers entering the workforce than in the past, and younger workers are more diverse in race and ethnicity than ever before (Bell, 2012, pig 401). 2. In addition to the suggestions provided in this heaper, what other things might organizations do to counter employees age-based stereotypes. These existing stereotypes and misconception both older and younger workers has lead to discrimination and unfair treatment at work and can reduce organizational function. In order to avoid this organization should identify the potential problems within the organization. This will enable you to know what you want in terms of the human resources and go for it. The organization should offer trainings to enable the employees to get awareness on discriminatory practices. In hose, training the employees should be given the open forum to participate actively. They should also be given the responsibility to speak up when they encounter any form of discrimination practices and harassment. When it comes to promotion, the employer should do it in terms of a reward to a performance tenure, whereby they are rewarded in form of promotions because of their value to the organization but not age. However, the importance of fairness to young workers, their future careers, and future influence on diversity issues should provide organizations with sufficient titivation to treat younger workers fairly, even in the absence of legislation requiring it. With or without widespread federal protections against discrimination, young workers should be assured of fair organizational treatment, freedom from harassment and discrimination, and recourse if it does occur ( Bell, 2012, pig 429). 3. How might the lack of broad federal legislation prohibiting age discrimination against younger workers contribute to their experiences of discrimination and harassment at work? The federal laws are designed to reduce, and ultimately eliminate, both younger and older age discrimination. Young people have a right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else. Many employers without any laid legal channels to protect this vulnerable group, take advantage of this since there will be no any lawsuits against them. There are cases of indirect discrimination occurs when a requirement, condition, or practice used for all parties negatively affects people of a particular age or age group. For example, it is unlawful to require strength and agility tests that disadvantage older applicants or employees when the levels of strength or agility are not prerequisites to successful Job performance. Bell, 2012, pig 429). Most employers preferred to work with older people aged 45 to 64 this is because young population will is always considered unsuitable to occupy the executive position within the corporate industry. Since the executive positions are left for the old aged generation because of their competency in handling the corporate affairs. They are considered to have corporate memory and experience than others therefore competent for the Jobs. Most employers take advantage to the age range of 14 to 17, who are always vulnerable to sexual harassment than the older workers. They take advantage of their lack of proper professional conduct to assault them. 4. Many Midriffs programming chief at the Weather Channel reportedly stood by a diversity poster as he made disparaging age- and gender-related comments about the appearance of women anchors. What signal does this send about the genuineness of the Weather Channels commitment to diversity? The weather Channel is not committed to diversity this because they treat the female workers with a lot of prejudice and discrimination at work. The negative statement of appearance of female anchors shows they perceive the women workers with contempt. They are only attracted to the attractiveness of these women rather than their Journalistic education, skills, and experience. They choose people with certain looks to read the news and believe attractiveness is based on age. This is the main reason for the preferences of hiring younger and male workers. This has severely disadvantage older women, many of whom may desire. (Flint, 2005). Chapter 14 Questions 1 . What are reasonable accommodations? How does a company determine what is reasonable and what is not? Reasonable accommodation is when a change can be implemented to enable a qualified person with a disability to perform essential Job unctions without unduly burdening the employer. A company is capable of determining what is reasonable or not reasonable when the process of providing an accommodation require significant difficulty or expense relative to the employers size, financial resources, and/or the nature and structure of the organization, then the employer would face undue hardship and would not have to provide the accommodation. (Bell, 2012, pig 438). A reasonable accommodation is reasonable when it results in benefits to other employees and the organization in many ways. Accommodation that is economical to the organization. Therefore, the managers can enable people with disabilities to work without thought or fanfare. For instance allowing an employee who is a student to tailor his or her work schedule around classes is a reasonable accommodation. They can also allow the employees to take time off to study for exams and make up the time on weekends or after the school, term is an accommodation. These employees would then come back to bring new skills to the organization. 2. What similarities exist between perceptions about the competence and performance of workers with disabilities and older workers? The errors with disabilities and aging population are perceived as unproductive in the labor markets. The employers always perceived disability as am obstacle to development in an organization since it impedes performance. They always take a prospective employee with a disability as unable to perform adequately because of the disability. Another similarity is that aging and disability are both acquired. Because some disabilities are acquired, some employers and employees discriminate and fail to accommodate them as before. An aging population, a greater propensity to acquire a disability with age, and working longer make the employment experiences of people with disabilities an increasingly important issue for organizations. (Bell, 2012, pig 432). 3. Accommodation for Ms. Barrios for inability to respond rapidly to an emergency evacuation is very simple, the management needs to move her office to a room closer to the emergency exit or incase of a storey building some meters away from the elevator. They should also improve on their emergency alarming system promptly any emergency cases. The benefit of this is that the organization will be able to respond promptly to emergency cases hence safeguarding the lives of its employees in any case of emergency. The case was not resolved before Ms. Barrios termination since the DuPont has a long history of hiring people with disabilities. Another reason is that DuPont has also conducted surveys to assess their performance, attendance, and safety records. In Equal to the Task II, DuPont reported that workers with disabilities had above-average or average ratings of performance, attendance, and safety in 90%, 86%, or 97% of cases, respectively (Bell, 2012, pig 449). . How can recommendations for employment equity for people with disabilities be helpful in ensuring equity for other non-dominant group members? Once overall training has been conducted, organizations should ensure all human resources functions are free of barriers. The first requirement is a valid, written Job description prior to advertising and interviewing for p osition, which makes clear what the essential and marginal functions are. Such a Job description can help decision makers avoid discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities or the non- dominant group members (Vance, 1976 pig 445). The organization should also use Job description and structured interviews when selecting applicants who are capable of successful Job performance, with or without seasonable accommodations. This means even the non-dominant group shall be considered on equal grounds. They should also be given equal and same opportunities for training and development as those without disabilities. Finally, Managers and coworkers with hiring responsibility should be trained about stereotypes and misconceptions of people with disabilities. The fact should be made clear that the performance and rates of absence from work of those with disabilities are comparable and sometimes better than those of people without disabilities are (Bell, 2012, pig 456). Execute Action Chapter 14 Conduct library or Internet research on the positive effects of work on peoples health and well-being. Discuss the applicability of employment to the health and well being of people with disabilities. According to the research people in work tend to enjoy a happier and healthier life than those who are out of work. Quite a number of people with physical disability like frequent muscle and Joint pain who have been advised by their health officers and medics to return to work tend to enjoy better health since there is a reduction in the level of pain, and an adequate improvement in the function and quality of life than those who stay off work. There are people who are sick and disabled that have remained in or return to work as soon as possible because its therapeutic, working helps to promote recovery and rehabilitation, and reduces the risk of long-term incapacity. The medics have also found out that being out of work for long periods was generally bad for your health, resulting in: more consultations, a continuous use of drugs and medical consultations and at times higher hospital admission rates than for the average population. Moreover well- being on the other hand has a positive impact to the production of a given company nice it has been confirmed that theres a strong business case for having a healthy workforce. Healthy staff is more productive and thats good for the bottom line of an organization.

Margaret Knight - Queen of Paper Bags

Margaret Knight - Queen of Paper Bags Margaret Knight was an employee in a paper bag factory when she invented a new machine part that would automatically fold and glue paper bags to create square bottoms for paper bags. Paper bags had been more like envelopes before. Workmen reportedly refused her advice when first installing the equipment because they mistakenly thought, what does a woman know about machines? Knight can be considered the mother of the grocery bag, she founded the Eastern Paper Bag Company in 1870.   Earlier Years Margaret Knight was born in York, Maine, in 1838 to James Knight and Hannah Teal. She received her first patent at the age of 30, but inventing was always part of her life. Margaret or ‘Mattie’ as she was called in her childhood, made sleds and kites for her brothers while growing up in Maine.  James Knight died when Margaret was a little girl. Knight went to school until she was 12, and began working in a cotton mill. During that first year, she observed an accident at a textile mill. She  had an idea for a stop-motion device that could be used in textile mills to shut down machinery, preventing workers from being injured.  By the time she was a teenager the invention was being used in the mills. After the Civil war, Knight began working in a Massachusetts paper bag plant. While working in the plant, she thought how much easier it would be to pack items in paper bags if the bottoms were flat. That idea inspired Knight to create the machine that would transform her into a famous woman inventor. Knights machine automatically folded and glued paper-bag bottoms – creating the flat-bottom paper bags that are still used to this very day in most grocery stores. Court Battle A man named Charles Annan tried to steal Knights idea and receive credit for the patent. Knight did not give in and instead took Annan to court. While Annan argued simply that a woman could never design such an innovative machine, Knight displayed actual evidence that the invention indeed belonged to her. As a result, Margaret Knight received her patent in 1871. Other Patents Knight is considered one of the female Edison, and received some 26 patents for such diverse items as a window frame and sash, machinery for cutting shoe soles, and improvements to internal combustion engines.   A few of Knights other inventions: Dress and skirt shield - 1883Clasp for robes - 1884Spit - 1885Numbering machine - 1894Window frame and sash - 1894Rotary engine - 1902 Knights original bag-making machine is in the  Smithsonian Museum  in  Washington,  D.C.
